Flag Explained
A Flag bet is a wager consisting of 23 separate bets across 4 selections. It includes 6 doubles, 4 treble, 1 four-fold accumulator and 3 up-and-down Single Stakes About pairs. In a Flag, every possible combination (‘permutation’) of selections is covered. It does not include single bets.
It is the same structure as a Trixie bet, with the addition of Single Stakes About pairs. See the Single Stakes About page to learn more about how those bets work.
A Flag provides a return even if only one of your selections is successful. As such, it provides a good level of insurance should selections not go your way. This comes at the cost of a lower potential payout when compared to other four selection bets for the same total stake.
A Yankee, which contains the same bets as a Flag minus the Single Stakes About pairs, has a higher potential payout, but requires at least two selections to win.
When choosing selections, consider the odds carefully. If your selections all have short odds, a return from just one or two winning selection may not be enough to recover your total stake. Incorporating some longer-odds selections can be an effective way to balance risk and reward.
Since a Flag consists of 23 individual bets, your stake is multiplied by 23. For example, if you place a £1 per bet Flag, your total stake will be £23. The calculator on this page allows you to either set a stake per bet or enter a total stake amount and have it calculate the individual stake per bet for you.
Flag Composition
A Flag bet covers various betting combinations using four different selections. Single Stakes About pairs give a return even if only one selection wins, which is where your coverage comes from if you only select one winner. Here’s a breakdown of the bet:
| Bet Type | Selection Combinations | Number of Bets |
|---|---|---|
| Doubles | 12, 13, 14, 23, 24, 34 | 6 |
| Trebles | 123, 124, 134, 234 | 4 |
| Fourfold Accumulator | 1234 | 1 |
| Single Stakes About pairs | 12, 13, 14, 23, 24, 34 | 6 (each containing 2 bets) |
| 23 bets |
How Does an Each Way Flag work?
An each way Flag bet is a variation that covers both winning and placing selections. This doubles the number of bets to 46 because each selection is backed twice:
- One bet for the selection to win.
- One bet for the selection to place (e.g., finishing in the top three in a horse race).
This increases the chances of getting a return, even if some selections don’t win outright. However, since the number of bets doubles, the total stake also doubles. You could reduce your stake to compensate, but it would provide a lower maximum return should all selections win compared to a non-each way Flag for the same total stake.
Flag Pros and Cons
Pros
✓ Higher chance of a return – Even if only one selection wins, you still get a payout.
✓ Risk management – Covering every permutation gives you insurance in the event of your selections not going your way. It provides a difference balance to the payouts compared to a Lucky 15. A Flag provides greater protection if there are two or less winners, but a lower payout on if there are 3 or more winners, assuming all odds are equal.
Cons
✘ Can still lose money – If only one selection wins, the payout might not be high enough to recover your overall stake. This can happen if you have selections with mostly short odds.
✘ Lower returns than an accumulator – Because a Flag includes coverage for singles and smaller multiples, the potential returns are lower than a standard threefold accumulator or Yankee for the same total stake.
✘ Doesn’t include bonuses – A Lucky 15, which is a very similar four selection bet, often has an all winner bonus or one winner consolation, which Flag bets don’t provide.
